A two-day regional workshop involving experts from the SWIM Partner Countries was organized on 23-24 April 2012 in Athens with the aim to:
a) promote sharing of experiences and best practices in the establishment and operationalization of WUAs in the region and
b) discuss / validate the findings of a SWIM-SM Regional Assessment illustrating the range of experiences – both successful and less successful - in water users’ participation with regard to irrigation, complemented with specific case studies coming from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia. The Regional Assessment was conducted in cooperation with and input from the SWIM National Focal Points and involved relevant stakeholders.
Twenty (20) international, regional and local experts from seven countries participated in the regional workshop, including representatives of governments, WUAs, regional organisations and donors in addition to non-governmental organisations involved in the establishment and empowerment of WUAs in the region.
Among outcomes, the workshop identified gaps and concrete follow-up actions for the SWIM-SM Project to undertake, including targeted capacity building and trainings in order to improve local water management and reinforce users’ participation in irrigation management.
Opportunities for networking between the countries’ representatives and international, regional and independent experts were also created.
The workshop falls under one of the four thematic pillars of the SWIM project involving enhancement of knowledge on ‘water governance at the local level’ with emphasis for the first year on experiences in Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) and irrigation management transfer for WUAs in the region.

SWIM-SM participated at the 5th Meeting of the Horizon 2020 Steering Committee (SC) Group that took place on 19 Aril 2012, in Barcelona - Spain. In that, H2020 Sub-Groups reported on progress and discussed ways forward for the initiative, highlighting on-going synergies and potentials for future co-operation with regional programmes, including SWIM-SM. SWIM-SM presented to the H2020 SC elements of a proposed Mediterranean Environmental Replication Strategy that is under joint elaboration by UNEP MAP GEF MedPartnership, SWIM-SM and H2020 CB MEP Programmes. Countries and stakeholders recognize the need to advance,in a systematic and coordinated way, replication of sustainable and cost-effective practices in the region and this is pursued through the Strategy under development. SWIM-SM was represented by Mr. Vangelis Constantianos, GWP-Med, who also attended the Meeting of the H2020 Sub-Group on Capacity Building, on 18 April.

SWIM-SM Workshop on Sustainable Use of Non-Conventional Water Resources, 16 September 2011, Athens - Greece
Sustainable management of non-conventional water resources is among the priority themes of SWIM-SM. The use of non-conventional waters is already applied in many countries of the region, primarily through reuse of treated and untreated waste water including recycling of agricultural run-off, rainwater harvesting, desalination, etc, with a range of challenges and opportunities related to these.
A SWIM-SM Workshop was organized on 16 September 2011 in Athens, Greece, back-to-back with the Regional Conference on Advancing Non-Conventional Water Resources Management in the Mediterranean with the aim to:
- Provide a briefing on SWIM-SM regional priorities in relation to the non-conventional agenda and contribute as a brainstorming meeting on the related parts of the upcoming SWIM-SM Inception Report.
- Discuss SWIM-SM regional priorities on wastewater reuse as a key issue in the non-conventional agenda.
- Discussing SWIM-SM regional priorities on desalination with emphasis on the possible formation of an Expert Group on Sustainable Desalination within SWIM-SM.
